J.W. was the son of William McClanahan Abbott and Fannie Tubb(s); m. 25 Apr 1869, Thompsonville, Gonzales, TX to Levi Seltzer (b. 2 Aug 1853, Wilcox Co., AL to Levi H. Seltzer and Mary C. Parks; d. 2 Jul 1930, Lockhart).

Joseph and Levi were married by Reverend James S. Abbott, Joseph's brother (James was the second husband of Mary C. Parks Seltzer, Levi's mother – upon Joseph's marriage to Levi, mother and daughter became sisters-in-law). During the civil war, Joseph served in Company F of Waul's TX Legion, CSA (also known as Willis' Battalion TX Cavalry), between 1862 and 1864.
