He was born Jan. 22, 1927 in Sims to Ralph and Alta (White) Pickering. He married Mary Catherine Jones Feb. 14, 1953, and she survives.
Max retired from C&O Railroad as an engineer after 36 years of service. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and a member of Center Chapel Brethren Church.
Survivors besides his wife include a son, Stephen Grant and wife Shirley, Kokomo; a daughter, Patsy Ruark and husband Dale, Peru; four grandchildren, Amy Wagstaff, Jamilee Chapman, Adam Grant and Jeremy Grant; a brother, Willard Glassburn, Urbana; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lloyd; and a sister, Laura.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, Peru, with Pastor Brad Eckerley officiating.
Burial will be in Thrailkill Cemetery, Grant County. A military committal service will be provided by the Miami County Military Rites Unit.
