Enlisted March 8, 1862. Captain in the 44th North Carolina Regiment, Confederate States of America. As a prisoner, he was at Norfolk, Va., Fort Delaware, Johnson's Island, Ohio, and Point Lookout, Md.
Graduated the University of North Carolina in 1857; MA degree in 1860.
A strong supporter of education, he taught school, was a lecturer & served on several boards. He eventually became sole owner of the Bingham School. Practiced law. Was a member of the North Carolina General Assembly and served as Speaker of the House in 1903. He was a Mason. He followed the family in the Presbyterian faith.

Married twice.

1. Delphine Louise Worth daughter of John Milton Worth.
They had 5 children: James Worth Bingham, Mary Kerr Bingham, Sadie Alves Bingham, William Bingham & Robert Worth Bingham.

2. Elvira Woodward, the daughter of Reverend B. F. Woodward
