Orville C. Avery was born in Gypsum, KS, September 20, 1910 and moved to Oklahoma City at the age of six years old. He passed away Monday, December 31, 2007, at the age of 97. He attended Capitol Hill High School. One of his first jobs was working at Cattleman's Restaurant in the Stockyards. He served his country during World War II from 1942 to 1945, serving the U.S. Army in the Battles of Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France and Central Europe. He served with the 1074th Signal Company in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He worked 20 years for National Biscuit Company in the icing department, where he met his wife of 61 years, Opal Fay Avery. He worked for 20 years for Cheatham Furniture, building and finishing furniture. Upon their closing, he went to work for Public Supply Company, where he worked for ten plus years. His favorite pastimes were working his garden, refinishing furniture and watching O.U. football. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alma and Fred Avery; his wife, Opal Fay Avery; his daughter, Shirley A. Goetsch-Barton; sister, Mary Tyler and husband Roy; brother, Cecil Avery and wife Della; brother, Otis Avery and wife Eugenia, brother, Alvin Avery and wife Edna, brother, Maynard Avery; and brother-in-law, Cecil Durant. He is survived by sister, Edith Durant; sister-in-law, Vie Avery; son-in-law, Robert J. 'Bob' Barton; nieces, Dorothy Kelly and husband John, Jeanette Cobb and husband Jim, Alma Lou Montgomery and husband Dick; granddaughter, Pam Barton-Stober and husband Doug Stober; great-granddaughter, Malayna Stober; along with other family and friends. Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 4th, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, January 5th, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at Sunnylane Funeral Home, 4000 S.E. 29th, Del City. Services 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2008, Little Chapel of the Roses at Resthaven Gardens Cemetery, 500 S.W. 104th, with burial to follow. Orville was a great husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend to all who knew him. His care and love for others will be truly missed.
