Racecar driver. 24 Hours of LeMans winner. Son of racecar driver Bob Holbert, he studied engineering at Lehigh University, graduating in 1968. During his time at Lehigh, he worked for Roger Penske. He raced as an amateur in the SCAA and turned professional in 1974. He was best known as a sports car racer, winning LeMans 3 times in 1983, 1986, and 1987 with Porsche. He also raced in NASCAR from 176 to 1979 and finished 4th in the Indianapolis 500. He was a 5-time IMSA Camel GT champion and also won both the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1986 and 1987 and the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1976 and 1981, giving him an unofficial career Triple Crown of Endurance racing. He died in Columbus, OH, when his Piper PA-60 aircraft crashed just after takeoff, after practicing for the IMSA Columbus Ford Dealers 500. He was inducted posthumously into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1993.
