Ryland was the son of James Monroe Campbell and Lucille Pauline Gray Smith. He grew up in Covington, Virginia and graduated from Covington High School. Ryland served in the United States Army.
On 18 May 1963, Ryland married Martha Jane Hritzko. Together they had 3 children: Christine Camille, James Ryland and Joseph Matthew Campbell.
Ryland worked at Wylie Laboratories for 32 years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was an avid softball player.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, James Ryland Campbell.
Uncle Ry was quite a character. He had a great sense of humor and was just fun to be around. He was very close to my dad, his oldest brother. Even though they were seperated by miles, they talked often and my dad visited him when time allowed.
