Upon arriving in Vietnam, Douglas was assigned to 3rd Platoon of Golf Company, 2nd
Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. On April 20 the 3rd Platoon was on a patrol, about 10 kilometers northeast of te Liberty Bridge, when a Marine detonated a booby trap explosive device killing 4 Marines and wounding Douglas. He was med-evac and taken to the 1st Station Hospital NSA where he died April 22 of fragmentation wounds to neck, chest area, left arm, and left leg.
