Tapley Bynum was born in Tennessee to John Bynum and Rhoda Murphree. He moved to Alabama in 1818 with his family.
He was a Farmer/Rancher and a member of the Methodist Church. Not an educated man, he read very little except The Bible and he could calculate interest or money quickly.
He married Eliza Cornelius, daughter of Moses Cornelius and Cynthia Bynum, on March 1, 1832. They had many children:
