Sam Willingham Shot and
Killed Near Cerrogordo
Sunday by Crazed Man
Tom Willingham Suffering With Bullet Wound in His Hand, While Dennis Citty Is Being Hunted by Officers.
Sam Willingham, age 47 years and a citizen of the Cerrogordo community in this county, is dead and his father, Tom Willingham, age 69, is suffering with a bullet wound in his hand, as a result of a young man's becoming crazed emptying his pistol into a bunch of men who had been playing cards at Rock Branch schoolhouse, west of Cerrogordo.
According to statements of officers who investigated the killing, Dennis Citty, age 22 years and unmarried had been playing cards with a bunch of men near the schoolhouse. He had been drinking and was in bad temper. He lost about two dollars in the game, which seemed to make him mad, and he arose and stated: "I think I will smoke out this bunch." He pulled a pistol and began shooting. The men began running and it was stated that Sam Willingham Ran about 100 yards, after he was shot, before he fell. Tom Willingham received the wound in his hand before he could make an effort to run. After Citty emptied his pistol, he made his escape and had not been seen up to late hour Tuesday evening. Officers of the Sheriff's force in Idabel believe however, that they will have him in custody before many hours. Sam Willingham, who had been shot through the kidneys, was placed in an automobile and rushed toward DeQueen hospital, but died before reaching there.
Dennis Citty, who resides with his father, W. G. Citty, in the Redland community, returned a short time ago from Muskogee, where he had served a ten-months term in Federal jail on a liquor charge.
Sam Willingham, a son of Tom Willingham and a nephew of Cooper and Dallas Willingham of Idabel, is a well known farmer and citizen of the Cerrogordo community, residing between that place and Jadie. He leaves a wife and five little children to mourn his loss, besides numerous relatives in different sections of the county. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Cerrogordo cemetery, under direction of Coffey Funeral Home of Idabel. Several people from this city attended the last sad rites, and state there was a large crowd present. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Millinder, and one citizen of Idabel stated that it was one of the best funeral orations he had heard in a long time.
The wound in the hand of Tom Willingham is quite painful, but it is not believed it will prove serious. The bullet did not go through the palm, as one of the finger bones caused it to glance off.
