Funeral Service for Mrs. Melcher Held Saturday, Died Wednesday, March 9, at Home of Daughter in the Platte Center Community.
Funeral services were held at St. Francis church in this city at 9 o'clock on Saturday morning for Mrs. Theresa Melcher, who passed away at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pillen, at Platte Center at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9. She had been in ill health for the past five years and death was due to complications of old age.
Rev. Father Cecil Koop, Assistant pastor, read the requiem high mass for the repose of her soul, and also officiated at the services held at the parish cemetery, where interment was made.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Dale Pillen, Lester Pillen, Ivan Mark, Jerry Melcher, Paul Melcher, and Pfc. Maurice Melcher. Honorary Pallbearers were Mrs. Margaret Berg, Mrs. Louis Hastreiter, Mrs. John Sueper, Mrs. Bernard Lohaus, Mrs. Elizabeth Eckholt and Mrs. Pauline Schnaecher. The members of the Christian Mother's Society and the Third Order of St. Francis, both of which societies the deceased had long been a member, were in attendence.
As Theresa Huseman, a daughter of John and Mary (Berg) Huseman, the deceased was born at Lowell, Indiana, on September 14, 1875. She received her education on St. Anthony's school in Klassville, Ind. At the age of 15 years she came with her parents to Platte county. The family settling on a farm north of St. Bernard. Here she spend her girlhood days and grew into young womanhood. She was united in marriage to Fred Melcher in January, 1899, the wedding taking place at the St. Bernard Catholic church, northwest of this city. They immediately went to housekeeping on Mr. Melcher's farm, northwest of this city. Her husband passed away in 1942, and she left the farm and came to Humphrey, purchasing a home in the south part of the city where she resided until her health began to fail. She then made her home with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Liewer and a week before her death, went to the home of her son-in-law and daughter.
She is survived by 10 children. They are Mrs. Henry Pillen of Platte Center, Mrs. Earl Mark of Humphrey, Ray Melcher of Wasco, Calif., Mrs. James Berg, of Waterloo, Ia, Arnold Melcher of Columbus, Clarence Melcher of Cedar Lake, Ind., and Ervin Melcher of St. Bernard. All the children were here for the funeral except one son Ray.
Also surviving is one brother, Julius Huseman of Humphrey; three sisters, Mrs. Ed Liewer of Humphrey, Mrs. Rex Zurcher and Mrs. Bill Schmidt of Stratton, Colo., and 55 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Two of her children, Jolette and Eursula, died in infancy.
Among those from a distance here to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Rex Zurcher and Mrs. Bill Schmidt of Stratton, Colo., Mr. and Mrs. Martin Melcher and daughter of Pierce, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Melcher and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hanke of Lindsay, PFC Maurice Melcher of the Marine Training Base in North Carolina, and friends from Madison, Platte Center, Cornlea, St. Bernard and Columbus."
