After a lingering illness death brought surecase from pain and rest come to the wearied soul of Mrs. Jos. Bender when she fell into the long and silent sleep on Friday morning, August twenty-second shortly after 12 o’clock. Her earthly life came to a close at the St. Catherine’s hospital in Omaha. NE. as the curtains of the night were drawn and while darkness enshrouded the earth there was opened to her the vision of the land of eternal light. She had been ailing for a number of years, having been afflicted with gall stones. There was a gradual decline of strength of late and the first of last week after a consultation with her family physician it was decided the she undergo an operation, which was performed at the hospital on Wednesday morning. She rallied nicely from the operation but on Thursday her condition became such that her children were called to her bedside, and although everything that the best of medical skill and loving hands could do was done her Maker willed otherwise and she was called to her Heavenly home. Her earthly remains were brought home Friday evening by her grief stricken husband and children and taken to the home in which she had lived only a few short years where they rested until Monday morning, when the last rites in her honor were held at nine o’clock at St. Francis church where the remains rested for a short time before the altar of the church where the in life the silent sleeper had worshipped during the years she had lived in our midst; Rev. Frs. Othmar and Maxamilliam, celebrated requiem high mass and the prayers for the soul of the departed found and echo in the hearts of all in the large congregation. At the close of the mass all gathered about the open tomb at the parish cemetery while Rev. Fr. Othmar consigned the body to the earth with the customary burial rites, Beautiful flowers rested about the grave, tributes of love and esteem which expressed better than words the sympathy of friends. Honorary pallbearers were Mesdames Domonic Roufs, Sherman Dixon, J.H. Fangman, William Foltz, Fred Lohaus and Georgiana Gehr. Active pallbearers were Ed Abler, Henry Schaecher, J.E. Hugg, H.C. Lachnit, Nick Feharinger and J.A. Zavidil. The deceased was born on the twenty-second day of August, 1870 in the neighborhood of Henry, IL, and at the time of her death was fifty-six years and four days old. Her maiden name was Katie Wunder and her youth was spent among relatives and friends of earlier days. On the twenty-first day of January, 1890, at Henry, IL, she was united in marriage to Joseph Bender, and following their marriage the came to Nebraska to the home which Mr. Bender had prepared for his bride, a few miles east of this city, he having come to Nebraska a couple of years before.
