Revolutionary War Veteran Soldier, War of 1812 Officer. Born in New Jersey, he served as a Private during the Revolutionary War in Captain Henry Phillips' Company of the 1st Regiment from Hunterdon County in New Jersey. After the war, Hunt entered the merchant business with his brother, Abijah Hunt, and followed General "Mad" Anthony Wayne's Army through the Northwest Territory in the late 1780's to trade with pioneer settlements. One of Cincinnati's earlist settlers, he arrived in 1789 before there was even a village, and only about 30 inhabitants, and stayed there for most of the remainder of his life. Nicknamed Cincinnati's "Father of Commerce", he frequently fought with Native Americans to preserve the settlement while he continued his profession. Hunt also operated a tannery in the late 1790's. During the War of 1812, he was appointed by General William Henry Harrison as an agent and paymaster and was an efficient assistant in the Commissariat Department. He died in Cincinnati in 1835 when he was 75 years old. Hunt was laid to rest in the Cincinnati Presbyterian Cemetery and was later removed to Spring Grove Cemetery in 1858 when the old cemetery was removed for development. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the Pendleton Lot. He is the grandfather of George Hunt Pendleton.∼Find A Grave Memorial# 23371526 is the correct record
