Michael Brannigan (AKA Brannagan & Bronagan) was the son of John & Mary Brannigan. He was age 15, single, residing in East Woburn, Mass., and working as a laborer when he enlisted as a private in Co. E, 17th Regt. Mass. Vol. Inf., on July 10, 1861. Twelve days later he was mustered into national service.
Brannigan reenlisted on Dec. 12, 1863, and was taken prisoner at Batchelder's Creek, N.C., on Feb. 1, 1864. He was brought to Camp Sumter, Andersonville, Ga., and died there of dysentery in 1864. The Mass. Adj. Gen. Office recorded his death as April 1, 1864, and the Town of Woburn recorded it as June 1864. Yet another source, published as an Appendix in Goss's The Soldier's Story, gives his death as July 19, 1864. Nevertheless, he died at age 18.
