In 1850, Levi Armstrong, age 20, was living with Gilbert and America Hankins in Marion Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. Also living with them was Elizabeth Armstrong, age 18. Levi's occupation was listed as carpenter. Next door was a 31 year-old named William Armstrong who was a blacksmith.

On November 2, 1854, Levi married Harriet M. West in Hendricks County.

In 1860, he and Harriet had 2 children of their own, Mary, age 5, and Samantha, age 2.

On July 9, 1863, Levi enlisted in the Union Army, as a 1st Sergeant in Company E, 103rd Indiana Infantry Regiment. He mustered out on July 16, 1863.

In 1870, Levi's widow was just 31 and raising 5 children on her own. In addition to Mary, age 14, and Samantha, age 12, she had John, age 10, Thomas, age 8, and William, age 5. All of the children were born in Indiana. Levi and Harriet were born in Kentucky.

In 1880, Harriet was still in Marion Township with John, Thomas and William living at home.

Three of Levi's children are buried here and share the same gravestone. Samantha E. Armstrong died May 10, 1886. John S. Armstrong died December 7, 1886. Thomas A. Armstrong died November 6, 1892.

Added June 17, 2008: I received an email from family researcher, Rebecca Bandy, who explained that the people with whom he was living in 1850 were his brother-in-law, Gilbert Hankins, and his sister, America, who was married to Gilbert. Elizabeth (Allee) Armstrong was Levi's wife. Harriet M. West was his second wife. He was the son of Levi Armstrong and Susannah Johnson of Shelby County, Kentucky. He was born there.

It is not verifiable whether Levi was specifically named for his father (if they had a middle name or not), but in keeping him identifiable as the son of Levi Armstrong, he is indicated here as Jr.
