Paul K. Waddell
Graveside services for Paul Kenneth Waddell will be conducted by the Reverend Larry O'Dell at Christ United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 1, at Forest Park Cemetery on St. Vincent.
Mr. Waddell passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2000. He was born on May 1, 1916, Los Gatos, California, to Samuel Walker "Doc" Waddell and his wife Lola Mae Sharrock Waddell, who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were his sister, Mable Waddell Glenn; his two brothers, Robert Charles "Bobby" Waddell and Oliver Leo Waddell; and his first wife, Billie McKinney Waddell, the mother of his two children, a daughter, Nancy Ann Waddell Hutson and a son, Robert Paul "Bobby" Waddell.
Mr. Waddell is survived by his devoted wife, Fran Phelps Clark Waddell, his children, Nancy and Bobby, their spouses, Henry Preston Hutson and Sharon Raines Waddell, and five grandchildren: Henry Preston, Hutson, Jr., and his wife Kati and daughter, Hannah Katherine; Leila Anne Hutson Millican and her husband Trent; Paul Waddell Hutson; Erin Leigh and Robert Paul "Beaux" Waddell, II; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Also a part of this loving family are a step-son, Dr. Paul Clark, his son and granddaughter, Paul and Annabelle, his wife Nancy Beth and their children, Benji and David; and step-daughter, Penny Clark Duncan, her husband Sam, and their children Nate and Adam.
Paul moved to Shreveport in 1919, attended public schools here, and was active in Boy Scouts, receiving the Eagle Scout Badge when he was 13, one of the youngest ever to receive this honor in the Norwella Council. He graduated from C. E. Byrd High school in 1933 and attended Centenary College where he was on the Dean's List, working several jobs to pay for his tuition during hard economic times. It was this type of determination and high regard for education that came to characterize
Paul as a man.
Appointed Railway Postal Clerk on July 11, 1937, he received his Commission and was promoted to U. S. Postal Inspector on May 11, 1942, one of the youngest ever appointed to the oldest federal investigative agency. He retired on July 31, 1975, as one of the senior postal inspectors. He had served at Headquarters in Washington, D. C.; Ft. Worth, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Memphis, Tennessee. He was stationed in Shreveport from 1948-1975, where his duties included criminal and civil investigations and recruiting and training inspectors in their duties as well as in fire arms training and
qualifications. After retirement, Paul worked part-time, first at Southern Research and then at Custom Built Cabinet until his illness forces him to retire several months ago.
Paul, a life-long Methodist, was a vital part of his church and his community.
He was an active member of the Order of the Masons and served as past Worshipful Master of Cedar Grove Masonic Lodge #403. He was also an active member of Cedar Grove Methodist Church, serving on the official board and as a trustee for a number of years.
During those years, he held various other leadership positions, working with the youth and coaching church, YMCA, and SPAR boys' baseball and basketball teams for eleven years. His tireless efforts, generous giving, and positive influence will continue to be felt for many years to come.
Serving as pallbearers will be all of his grandsons; serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Prayer Breakfast of Christ United Methodist Church.
