Private family services are planned for Lorrence Allen Piper of Eugene, who died Nov. 30 of age-related causes. He was 80.
Piper was born May 1, 1924, in Dayscreek to Kenneth and Ann Penoyer. He married Maxine Temple Walling in 1955. They later divorced, and he married Nellie Herring in 1972 in Coquille.
He graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1941. He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1948 as a pharmacist mate third class, spending four years on the USS Rixey. He returned to Harrisburg and later moved to the Coquille and Coos Bay area. He worked in a sawmill for Coos Bay Lumber Co., eventually purchased by Georgia-Pacific, from 1949 to 1986, then he retired.
Piper belonged to Coquille Valley Elks 1935 and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member and past master of Chadwick Lodge 68. He belonged to the Coquille Methodist Church. He enjoyed golf and hunting.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Janice McCartney of Clackamas; two sons, Doug Walling of Eugene and Jamie Herring of Brookings; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Private family graveside services, with military honors, will be in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Amling-Schroeder Funeral Service of Coquille is in charge of arrangements.
