Lydia Alice Woodberry was born in South Carolina in 1795. Around 1812 she married Thomas Grantham (1790-1863) there and had several children before moving to Mississippi by 1819. There, they farmed and had other children. (They had a total of twelve children, ten of them males.)

By 1850, they had a farm in Carroll Co., Miss., with only one of their sons still living with them, along with Thomas's mother, Elizabeth. There, they had 20 improved acres and 60 unimproved. By 1860, in what was then part of Choctaw Co., "Liddia" and Thomas lived with no other family members. Lydia died that year, at age 65, and Thomas died there in 1863, at age 73.
