DUMAS - Helen Beauchamp, 78, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2007.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church with Dr. Mark Scott officiating, assisted by Marilyn VanPetten. Burial will be in Dumas Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors.
Helen Beauchamp was born Jan. 23, 1929, in Atoka, Okla., to Paul and Una Wells. She received her education at the Bivens and Dumas schools. On Dec. 19, 1945, she married Carl Beauchamp who preceded her in death on May 16, 2006.
She received her pilot's license in 1947 and was the first female pilot in Moore County. She was named queen of the Flying Farmers. Helen was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and served as general chairperson for the Moore County Centennial Celebration. She was involved in the building campaign for the Dumas and Moore County YMCA, serving on the committee for finance. She was a board member of the Moore County United Way for 20 years, serving as secretary and president. She was the Moore County representative for the Golden Nail Awards for five years.
In 1980, Helen was chairman for the matching fund drive of Moore and Hartley counties for the Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center. In 1981 she worked on the board of development for the center. She served on the board of directors for the Harrington Cancer Center from 1982 to 1996 and the board of trustees from 1997 to 2005. In 1980, she received an Outstanding Achievement Award. She was involved in the establishing of Cancer Support Inc. in 1982. From 1983 through 1991 she volunteered with the Circle of Friends. In 1991, she was presented life membership to Circle of Friends for outstanding contribution to the organization. Helen, through her dream of Circle of Friends, helped the Panhandle communities become educated to the services of the Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center and the need for ongoing financial support for cancer patients.
In 1989, she received the Women's Forum Texas Panhandle Distinguished Women's Service Award for Volunteerism. In 1993 she was Moore County Citizen of the Year with her husband, Carl. In 2001, she was named Old Timer of the Year with Carl. In 2001 she received the Joyce Willow Heritage Award. Helen has been active in many clubs and activities: the Pierien Study Club, Moore County Farm Bureau, Cow Belles and was a member of the Harrington Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include two daughters, Carlene Beauchamp and Paula Gibson and husband Lee; three grandchildren, Braden, Brett and Katie Gibson; and a sister-in-law, Vannie Beauchamp.
The family suggests memorials be to Circle of Friends, 1500 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106; Memorial Nursing & Rehab activity fund, 224 E. Second, Dumas, TX 79029; or First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 395, Dumas, TX 79029.
