Grandpa was a man that liked fun and beer like his sons Fred and John except that Grandma ruled with an iron hand. She counted the money and it better be all there or he was limited on beer. She kept him properly poor so he couldn't get notions.
Grandma was known as the only woman in those days that had the courage to burst through the swinging doors in the old saloons and tap John on the shoulder and say, "Come on John, out, you have had enough." She could smell the saloon he was in, Grandpa was a gay boy, a free spender if he could get his hands on the money, but also a good business man.
Grandma was a little woman with a six foot husband but she had the guts to stand up to any man. If one of the early settlers got drunk and beat his wife up, the wife would go to grandma with her troubles. Grandma would read the riot act to the husband in public and in such a way that he wouldn't pull that stunt again.
On one occasion, she beat the hell out of a drunken man with a broom stick for beating his wife.
