Arkansas Governor, U.S. Senator. He graduated with a degree in law from the University of Virginia, in 1878 and started a law practice in Helena, Arkansas, in 1879. He was a member of the Arkansas House of Representatives, (1886-88), served in the Arkansas State Senate, (1888-92) and was Attorney General of Arkansas, (1892-94). In 1894, he was elected as a Democrat the 18th Governor of Arkansas, serving until 1897. While in office, he advocated four-year terms for state and county offices and crusaded to prevent prizefighting in Arkansas. Not seeking reelection, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 1903, serving his death from an illness at age 62.
