Ethel Burroughs was the daughter of William H. and May (Lavender) Burroughs. She grew up in Somerville, Middlesex Co., Mass., and graduated at the Somerville Latin School, Class of 1903. She was a 23-year-old senior at Smith College, Northampton, Mass., when she was killed on May 18, 1908, by jumping from the back seat of a carriage being pulled by runaway horses, at Goshen, Mass.
