Lillie Icel Dixon, daughter of Fred and Ella Ethel Hull Renfrow, was born November 17, 1911 near Denlow, Missouri. She departed this life Saturday, November 24, 2007 in the Hartville Care Center at the age of ninety-six years and seven days.
On December 4, 1929, Lillie was united in marriage to Arvis Dillard Dixon and to this union five children were born.
Lillie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arvis, on March 9, 1997; an infant son, Carl Dean Dixon; four brothers, Archie, Virgil, Bill, and Bob Renfrow; and three sisters, Eva Henson, Ruby Kirkland, and Bonnie Hostettler.
She is survived by one son, Wayne Dixon and his wife, Helen, of Hartville, Missouri; three daughters, Jean Coy and her husband, Leo, and Janet Vandergrift and her husband, Art, both of Hartville, Missouri, and Glenda Jones and her husband, Stanley, of Norwood, Missouri; nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Van Renfrow and his wife, Sharon, of Norwood, Missouri; a number of nieces and nephews along with a host of other relatives and friends.
She was born and raised south of Norwood, in Douglas County, where she attended the Stoney Point School. After she met and married Arvis, they made their home in Olathe, Missouri, south of Mansfield, on a farm that Arvis had purchased in 1929. It was here that Arvis and Lillie lovingly raised all their children.
In 1957, Lillie and Arvis bought a café in Mansfield, which they called "The Dixon Café," and operated it until moving to Hartville in 1966.
Early in life, Lillie had professed her faith in Christ and was a long time member of the Hartville Freewill Baptist Church. She was a devoted wife who faithfully served beside Arvis throughout his years as an ordained minister.
Lillie's family was very important to her, and she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren whenever possible.
Lillie loved café work and found enjoyment working in several different restaurants throughout the Hartville area. Being a people person, Lillie enjoyed visiting with various customers who frequented the restaurants. In her later years, her family attested to the fact that "watching people" was one of her favorite pastimes.
Lillie was a member of the Hartville Senior Citizens as well as the Garden Club. She grew the most beautiful flowers and took great pride in her flower and vegetable gardens.
Lillie loved to watch sports, especially when her grandchildren were playing them. She enjoyed going to auctions and garage sales. She had a knack for ciphering math and never found anyone who could beat her. In her spare time, Lillie found pleasure in doing handwork, making rugs, crocheting, quilting, collecting ceramic frogs and chickens, as well as miniature kerosene lamps, etc. Lillie was a top-notch seamstress and created wonderful garments from limited resources. Even in her early nineties, Lillie lovingly altered and hemmed uniforms for the Hartville Eagles Band.
Lillie was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate her life and accomplishments and will cherish the wonderful memories she has created for her family and many dear friends.
