James, was the son of James J. Brock and Katherine M. Brock, the dear brother of Thomas who predeceased him of Cleveland hio, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 4, 1962 in Cleveland. He arrived in Vietnam on July 6, 1965 assigned with Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

After the initial phase of the planned movement on December 10, during operation Harvest Moon, LtCol Utters Company E was dispatched south of their location to link up and with Company F 2d Battalion, 1st Marines who were pinned down by enemy fire and taking casualties. Both Marine rifle Company's engaged the enemy who were in well entrenched, fortified, and in concealed positions along a tree line which began at the base of Hill 407. The enemy force was equipped with 12.7mm machine guns, mortars and a variety of small arms which rained a heavy volume of fire on the attacking Marines. The battle continued until both units were able to withdraw with their casualties into a defensive perimeter that night.

The day had been costly for the Marines, four men were killed in action and two would later die of their wounds. One of the casualties was Cpl Brock who died as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds.
