He was married three times, first to Sarah (AKA Sallie) Garner (who he is buried with), and later to Elizabeth Hudgeons and Mary E. Hill. His second and third marriages ended in divorce.

With his first wife, he was the father of Martha Caroline (wife of John Franklin Peterson), Rachel Ann (Wife of Riley Liggett), Sarah Delona (wife of Louis Wells Miller), Zanilda or perhaps Finetta), John Washington, Jr. (husband of Martha Susanna Wilbanks), Nettie, Bennett (husband of Annie A.) and Joseph Garner (husband of Nancy Lee Rucker).
