Mr. William Clarence Shumate, Sr., age 79 of McGrady died Saturday, January 27, 2007 at Forsyth Medical Center.

the Rev. Mark Hall and the Rev. Donny Shumate officiating. Burial with military honors by post #1142 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Shumate was born September 11, 1927 in Wilkes County to Calloway and Geneva Stamper Shumate. Before retiring he worked in the timber business for many years and for L & L Manufacturing. Mr. Shumate served in the United States Army and was a member of Christian Assembly.

A daughter, Judy Carol Shumate preceded him in death.

He is survived by: his wife, Chessie Wagoner Shumate of the home; three daughters, Gail Eller and husband, Dwayne of Millers Creek, Diane Blevins and husband, Garry of Lansing, Kaye Bening and husband, Dave of Addieville, IL; six sons, Rex Shumate and wife Mary-Lou of McGrady, Bill Shumate and wife, Tonie of Hays, Ronnie Shumate and wife, Betty of Benton City, WA, Donny Shumate and wife, Kay of McGrady, Ray Shumate, and wife, Gail of North Wilkesboro, Bobby Shumate and wife, LeAnn of North Wilkesboro; two sisters, Georgia Ellis, Sadie Blevins both of McGrady; one brother, Harden Shumate of North Wilkesboro; twenty-three grandchildren and thirty-one great-grandchildren.
