A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted in Lancaster June 30, 1863, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 15 as a private with Co. G in the six-month organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa). Promoted to 2nd sergeant, date as yet unknown, he honorably discharged with his company February 20 , 1864, in Chambersburg. He then enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster September 1, 1864, as 1st sergeant of Co. K, 203rd Pennsylvania Infantry. On May 26, 1865, he was promoted to the rank of 2nd lieutenant but honorably discharged with his company June 22, 1865, without mustering at the rank, which means he never held the rank despite what the tombstone claims.
In 1870, he lived with his family in Fawn Township, York County, but by no later than 1880 relocated to Frederick County, Virginia. there joining Mulligan Post No 30, G.A.R.
