Israel was the son of John Bliss and Hannah Tickner.

Israel married Mary Stiles 28 Apr 1763 in Lebanon, Windham County, CT.

They had 5 children: Israel, Solomon, David, Oliver and Calvin.

It is related of him that on one occasion during the revolutionary war, being in a public place or inn where "flip" was the fashionable beverage, one of the king's press-gangs slipped a piece of the king's money into his pocket and claimed his service on board a man-of-war; but he seized the hot iron used for heating the flip and kept the gang at bay till he had burned a hole in his pocket through which the coin dropped out and thus avoided touching the king's money.
