His father, Eli Easterwood, was a Civil War soldier killed in action June 15, 1864 in Battle of Gilgal Church / Lost Mountain, Georgia. In 1870, John lived with his widowed mother and sister in Rising Sun, Ohio County, Indiana.
In 1877, he married Mary Magdalena Hickner in Cleves, Ohio. They lived in Ohio and Ripley counties in southern Indiana before moving to Tipton County.
