Social Reformer. He was born in Romania and immigrated to the United States as a three year old child. His family settled on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Leibowitz graduated from Cornell Law School and quickly became on of the county's most prominent criminal defense attorneys. Leibowitz was counsel on dozens of notorious trials. He is best remembered as counsel for the Scottsboro Boys, nine Africian -American teens falsely accused of raping two white women and sentenced to death in 1931 Alabama. Leibowitz worked on the case for four years without pay or reimbursement for his expenses. He argued the case before the United States Supreme Court and won on the grounds that the State of Alabama systematically excluded blacks from jury service. He later served with distinction for over twenty years as a New York state trial judge.
