Major League Baseball Player. Played Major League baseball as a pitcher for eleven seasons (1891 to 1901) for the St. Louis Brown Stockings (Cardinals) of the American Association and National League, and the Cincinnati Reds. As a young man he worked for the Wrought Iron Range Company making cookstoves in St. Louis, and continued to work there during his baseball career. By 1895 he was considered to be the finest lefthander in baseball. Three times he won over 19 games, topping with 27 in 1894. The previous year he led the National League in ERA with 3.18.
