George William was the oldest of three sons born to George and Elizabeth Smith Backous: George William 1894, Walter E. 1897 and harold Oxley 1900.

THE NEVADA JOURNAL, December 16, 1969. "SERVICES WILL BE THURS. FOR GEORGE BACKOUS. George Backous, 1226 Lincolnway, Nevada, died at the Story County Hospital Tuesday morning at the age of 75. He had been ill for the past three years. Born March 13, 1894 in Yorkshire, England, he was the son of George and Elizabeth Backous. He had been a resident of Story County for the past 63 years. He was married to Clara B. Basey* (*VASEY) August 7, 1913 in Nevada. A retired farmer in recent years, he was a member of the E. U. B. Church. Survivors include his wife Clara, one son Irvin Backous of Nevada; two daughters, Mrs. Luke Bakka of St. Joseph, Mich., and Mrs. Clarion Sampson of Nevada; 12 grandchildren; and two brothers, Walter Backous of Altoona and Harold Backous of Maxwell. He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter. Funeral services will be at the Ryan Funeral Home Thursday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Baker officiating. Burial will be in the Iowa Center Cemetery."
