JOHN W. GATES
STATE BRIDGE John W. Gates, aged 67, a well known resident died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Zenas Poppleton, on Saturday at about 10 p.m. He was born in Wurtemburg, Germany in 1837, and was the son of John and Christine Gates.
His wife died in Watertown about eight years ago. He was a United States veteran and belonged to G.A.R. Post No 269 and was a member of Company B, 10th Regiment, N.Y. Volunteers. He is survived by two sons, Archie and Gilbert of Syracuse, one daughter, Mrs. John Pleasant of Mohawk, one brother, Louis, of Detroit, and three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Arnold, Mrs. Zenas Poppleton, of this place and Mrs. Henry Linstruth of Belfert, N.Y. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church on Monday afternoon, the Rev. Mr. Aylesworth officiating and burial was made in West Cemetery.
