Law Enforcement Officer. He was an original member of the Cleveland Police Force Homicide Unit, and in 1924, he was the first African-American promoted to detective on the Cleveland Police Force. He had joined the force two years earlier and served for 36 years. Along with his career partner, Horace Jenkins, he investigated more than 1,000 homicides, including the assassination of Councilman William Potter in 1931, the infamous Torso Murders on Kingbury Run in the 1930s, and the Sheppard Murder case. He knew the people he was serving; there was communication between the community and law enforcement. He and his partner received commendations from Eliot Ness for the professional work. After retirement, he was bail bondsman and worked with neighborhood children. He was raised by a brother in Birmingham, Alabama. and later attended Talladega College in Alabama. He relocated to Cleveland from Youngstown, Ohio in 1918.
