Mother of Mrs. Flesher Dies Here

Mrs. Botkin; 93, Succumbs after long illness on New Years Day. Mrs. America Botkin 93 years old and the mother of Mrs. Charles H. Flesher of this city, died at the home of her daughter here on Sunday after a lengthy illness. She had made her home during recent years with Mrs. Flesher and another daughter, Mrs. Metcalf of Nile, Iowa. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Nile Tuesday afternoon with burial in the family plot in Union Cemetery, near Sandyville. America Lyon was one of eleven children born to John (Berry) & Letitia (Letty Harrison) Lyon and she was born in Shelby County, KY, June 24, 1839. Her father died when she was a young girl. She came with her mother to Warren County, Iowa in 1855 and settled near Sandyville. She married L. W. Botkin of the same community Dec.15, 1857. They at once moved to a farm Mr. Botkin had entered from the goverment and for which he held a patent signed by President Franklin Pierce. Five children were born to them, a son who died in infancy and four daughters. The oldest daughter, Mrs. Callie Cleveland and Mrs. Addie Rench passed away several years ago. Those living are Mrs. Vinnie Flesher of Gilmore City and Mrs. Elgie Metcalf of __. Besides these there are thirteen grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Mrs. Botkin became a Christian in early life and united with the Baptist church then with the Christian church. Later she united with the Methodist church of Sandyville and continued a faithful follower of Jesus to the end of life's journey. Often saying in recent years that she was anxious to go to her heavenly home for which she had lived so many years. She was a woman of exceptionally strong character and was always a leader in all community activities.
