Musician. Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, he learned to play the button accordion at age nine and is considered one of the fathers of Zydeco music. In 1952, with his band the Majic Sounds, he recorded for Goldband Records what was effectively the first studio session of the French Cajun style music to become dubbed Zydeco. His single "Paper in My Shoe" (1954) is regarded by many to be the first modern version of Zydeco. After this initial recording session, he dropped out of music for a while but with the popularity Zydeco, his musical career came roaring back in the 1980s. He toured and was known for his energetic commanding musical presence. He died in Austin, Texas, of complications after a heart attack.
