Actor, Playwright. Born in Queens, New York, he was best remembered for the role as Father Damien Karras in William Friedkin's "The Exorcist" (1973). He also appeared in "The Nickel Ride" (1974), "The Dan Curse" (1978), "Monsignor" (1982), "The Exorcist III" (1990) and "Rudy" (1993). As a playwright, he won a Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for writing the play "That Championship Season" in 1973. He also co-founded the Scranton Public Theatre, Pennsylvania, directed and starred in various productions. Former son-in-law of actor-comedian, Jackie Gleason and father of actor, Jason Patric. He died in Scranton, Pennsylvania, at age 62.
