Eli Davis was likely born in Union Co., South Carolina in about 1802 the son of Enos Davis and Hannah Marshall (1775-1857).

In about 1833, he married Mary Barnet, with whom he had two children: George and Sarah. On the 9 June 1838, he married Mary Ann Haddock (ca. 1812-1881) in Vigo Co., Indiana. Eli and Mary had at least two children between 1842 and 1852: Enos and Martha. Eli and Mary moved their family at some point following the birth of their son Enos to Oregon, where Eli obtained an Oregon Land Donation Claim in Washington County in 1846. Eli was a farmer in Washington County.

Several databases and Eli's headstone, which was placed long after his death, state he died in 1888. However, Eli likely died in 1861. There is an estate record for Eli Davis of Washington County dated that year, and he last appears on US census and tax records in 1860.
