Born Hannah Maria Higdon, daughter of John and Rebecca Reynolds Higdon, she served as a teacher at St. Mary's Orphan Asylum in Natchez, Miss., between the years 1860-1870 at least, before returning to the Central House at Emmitsburg. She was also one of the charter faculty of St. Joseph's School for Girls and secretary for the corporation.
