Daughter of Alfred Jordon SMITH,Sr. & Grace B. McCORMICK

A great lady. Owned the Bull Pen Cafe in Columbia, MO, for years. Had lots of friends and was well thought of in the City of Columbia.

Obituary from Columbia Missourian Tuesday, March 19, 1991:

Helen B. LANE, former owner of the Bull Pen Cafe in Columbia, died Saturday, March 16, 1991, at the Columbia Regional Hospital. She was 66.

Mrs. LANE, who worked at the restaurant at 2310 Business Loop 70 E. for almost 45 years, tried to remember all of her regular customers' birthdays and give them cake, said her son, James LANE.

"What gave her the most enjoyment was taking care of her regular customers," he said.

After working at the restaurant for years, Mrs. LANE bought the Bull Pen Cafe in 1981. she sold it in October when her health began to decline, her son said.

The cafe is a favorite stop for many Missouri State Highway Patrol Troopers and Boone Sheriff's Deputies, as well as being the site of many political meetings.

"She probably saw more people in one day than most of us do in a week." said Capt. Larry McCray of the Sheriff's Department. "If any of the locals was sick or in the hospital or had somebody die, there was a card for them when they came in."

Mrs. LANE was born Sept. 6, 1924, in Franklin, Mo., to Albert J. and Grace B. SMITH. She married Roy H. LANE on March 6, 1941, in Boonville. He died in 1977.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. today at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services will be at 3:30 P.M. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel and will be conducted by the Rev. Russell Barns. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. LANE is survived by one son, James LANE of Columbia; one daughter, H. Jean LANE of Lafayette, Ind.; two sisters, Margaret L. Dowling of Boonville and Johnnie M. Wehmeyer of Eldon, Mo.; 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
