William R. "Bill" Herbig, 82, Anderson, passed away Oct. 9, 2007, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born June 16, 1925, in Middletown, Ohio, the son of William R. and Ovah (Sharpe) Herbig. He lived in Anderson most all of his life.
He was a lieutenant j.g. in the U.S. Navy, serving for four years, 1942-1946, in North Africa and Asia.
He worked as locomotive fireman for New York Central Railroad in 1948. He worked as gage crib checker from 1946 to 1950, production supervisor from 1950 to 1975, general supervisor of Salary Production Employees from 1960 to 1975 and director of Salary Incentive Program from 1975 to 1980, all for Delco Remy Division of General Motors Corp., and retired in 1980 after 34 years. He worked at Anderson Convention Bureau from 1980 to 1986, where he was founder and first executive director. He was a licensed auctioneer and ran Hobby Auctions all over the USA. He was owner and founder of Consultant to Tourism Attractions, an instructor at Arthur Murray School of Dance and was also a computer salesman from 1990 to 1993 for Radio Shack.
Bill was a member of Jaycees, where he served on the national board from 1950 to 1951 and was past president in 1961. He was also a member of Boy Scouts, where he was Eagle Scout and Scout Master, served on the District and Council Committee, received the Silver Beaver Award and was Wood Badge Course Director. He was a member of National Model Railroad Association, where he served as vice president in 1967, and a 46-year member of American Legion, where he was commander in 1950. He was a member of Anderson's Mainstage Theatre and played parts in more than 15 plays, receiving Actor of the Year in 1987. He was a member of Daleville Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, Murat Shrine Temple and Madison County Shrine Club, where he served as secretary for four years. He was also head of Junior Achievement, a member of Eagles Lodge and Elks Lodge and was an officer for the Mental Health Association.
He is survived by four children, William L. (wife, Susan) Herbig of Atlanta, Ga., Jeff (wife, Amy) Herbig of Anderson, Scott Herbig of Anderson and Janet Leihigh of Cincinnati, Ohio; and nine grandchildren, William H. Herbig of Atlanta, Ga., Karre Ann Herbig, Stacy Herbig and Phillip Herbig, all of Anderson, and Rebekah Osborne, Joshua Smith, Tyler Binnon, Jason Binnon and Mindy Morton.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Jean Huffman Herbig, in 2002.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home with Don White officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
