In 1891, James married Elizabeth Durbin, born in Kentucky (1869-1927). Elizabeth was a daughter of Napoleon Durbin (1815-?) and Cynthia Hill (1832-?), both born in Kentucky.
James and Elizabeth settled in Cynthiana, Harrison County, Kentucky, where he opened his dentist office and they had four sons: Cleon B. Adams (1891-1965), James D. Adams (1893-1938), Vernon Adams (1896-1977), and Wilson Adams (1899-1921), all born in Harrison County.
James died at the age of 47 on Oct 28, 1908. Elizabeth died 19 years later in 1927. Both are buried in Battle Grove Cemetery along with other family members.
