John was born and raised in Brockton. His grandparents migrated to America from Ireland.
John enlisted in the Marines 26 August 1965, at a Boston Recruiting Office and took his boot camp training at Parris Island.
When John arrived in Vietnam he was assigned to the 2nd Platoon with Hotel Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
While participating in Operation Beaver Track Hotel Company was in the vicinity of Go Linh, when the 2nd Platoon was ambushed, 3 kilometers south of Con Thien. John died as a result of a shrapnel wound to the neck area from enemy mortar fire. John had previously been wounded during combat.
John was single and served his country for 1 year, 10 months and 10 days and KIA #14,295.
