Mrs. Samuel Small was born near Tumbridge Wells, England, A.D., 1810. She came with her parents, Charles and Charlotte Clark to the United States in 1820, and located in Ripley county, Ind., uniting with the Baptist church at the age of 17 years. She was married to Samuel Small, Jan. 25, 1831; moved to Iowa in 1856, and in 1864 came to Pawnee county, Neb., again uniting with the Baptist church, of which she remained a member until her death, which occured June 3d, 1900, at the ripe age of 89 years, 10 months and 18 days. Her husband died December 29, 1867.
Mrs. Small was the mother of 10 children, of whom 3 died in infancy. Her two sons, Thomas and George Small, are highly respected citizens of Pawnee county. Five daughters survive, vis.: Mrs. J. Woods of Pawnee, Mrs. Tucker of Summerfield, Kan., Mrs. Bogue and Mrs. Riley of Norton county, kan., and Mrs. John Stahl of Steinauer, Neb., all of whom were present at the funeral except Mrs. Riley. One aged sister of Mrs. Small, Mrs. McKay, was present, with a large concourse of relatives and friends, who gathered at Lower West Brach schoolhouse at 10:30 o'clock, Monday, June 4, 1900, where Rev. Baliard of pawnee conducted funeral services, using the text, " Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."- Thus passed away one of the pioneers of Pawnee county, after more than 32 years of widowhood, and life prolonged amidst much physical suffering at times. Yest her faculties of mind remained clear, almost to the close, having lived through the greater part of the 19th century, and seeing her children of the fourth generation. The remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband.
