H.A. Delavan

Funeral services for H.A. Delavan were held from the residence in north Tabor Saturday afternoon, September 1, at two o'clock. The day of the service was the fifty-third anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Delavan's marriage and it was also the anniversary of their daughter's marriage. Rev. Manford Linville, Charlie Delavan, Paul Seeger, Sam Estes, Dr. George R. Estes, Richard Estes, and Wade Delavan. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill cemetery northwest of town. The sympathy of relatives and friends for the bereaved family was expressed by the many beautiful flowers and by the large attendance at the funeral.

Among the relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. C.P. LeMire and daughter Margaret Erville, from Kansas City, who were called here early in the week by Mr. Delavan's critical condition; Mr. and Mrs. G.C. Seeger and son Donald of Council Bluffs; Will Moats and family of Logan; Will Fitzpatrick and family of Mondamin; John Ulm and family of Council Bluffs; Mrs N.E. Browning of Woodbine; Mrs. A.C.R. Swenson of Omaha; Arthur Weatherhead and family of Hamburg; Sam Harrison of Onawa; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Harrison, Mrs. H.H. Harrison and Alvin Williams of Whiting; Mr. and Mrs. George Harrison of Moorehead; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Dashner, Mr. and Mrs. John Wolfe, Dr. and Mrs. George R. Estes, Mrs. H.A. Estes, Sam Estes and Mr. and Mrs. Fay Wright of Glenwood; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Seeger of Malvern; Mrs. Mayrta Rhoades and Miss Mabel Estes of Omaha.

Hiram A. Delavan, son of Alfred M. and Olive V. Delavan, was born January 14, 1845, in Morgan county, Indiana, and departed this life at his residence in Mills county, Ia., August 30, 1923, at the age of 78 years, 6 months, and 16 days.

When deceased was 12 years old he and his parents moved to Cass county, Mo., where they remained until 1863, when they removed to Mills county, Ia. At that time the county was sparsely populated and roving bands of Indians from adjoining western states were frequent visitors. The transcontinental railways had not yet been built and the deceased was one of the few remaining pioneers who crossed the plains to the Rocky Mountains in covered wagons drawn by yokes of oxen.

On the first day of September, 1870, fifty-three years ago, deceased was united in marriage with Margaret M. Estes, daughter of Richard C. and Elizabeth Estes, and a native of Mills county. To them were born five children, three of whom, an infant daughter, Edward C. and Lulu L. have preceded the deceased to the great beyond. He is survived by his wife, Margaret M., a son, Richard C., a daughter Erville Delavan LeMire of Kansas City, Mo., three grandchildren, Paul and Dallas Delavan and Margaret Erville LeMire, one sister, Mrs. S.E. Linville of Glenwood, and two brothers, Horatio N. of Tabor, and Alfred M. Delavan of Long Beach,Calif.

The deceased became a member of the Church of Christ in the winter of 1868 and has for more than half a century exemplified the teachings of the Master.

He was stricken with illness in the spring of 1919 and has ever since that time been continuously confined to his bed, but in all that time no word of complaint has ever passed his lips and to the last he maintained the sweet spirit of cheerfulness which throughout his life has won the love of all who came in contact with him. His passing must indeed cause deep sorrow in the hearts of relatives and friends, but they must find solace in the fact that every act of his life was one of Christian usefulness and above reproach.
