Austrian Nobility, Monarch of Mexico. The younger brother of the Emperor of Austria Franz Joseph, he was Commander in Chief of the Imperial War Fleet. From 1857 to 1859 he was Governor of Lombardy-Veneto. In 1864, thanks to the auspices of Napoleon III, he became Emperor of Mexico where he moved with his wife Carlotta of Belgium. However in 1867, due to revolutionary upheavals led by Benito Juárez, Maximilian was deposed, imprisoned and shot. His remains were returned to Austria in 1868.
