Seaman Apprentice Shayna A. Schnell of Tell City, Indiana spent her childhood years in Dubois County but moved to Perry County when she entered junior-high school. She graduated from Perry Central High School in 2006 and enlisted in the United States Navy where she finished her basic training at Great Lakes, Ill. While stationed in Bahrain, she was visiting Dubai, United Arab Emirates. when a Sept. 24 accident occurred. She was in a taxi en route to a doctor's office when a tire on the taxi failed, sending the vehicle into a brick wall. The wall then collapsed on the vehicle. She was a chief Mideast ally to the United States and was serving as a master-at-arms assigned to Naval Security Force Bahrain, Jebel Ali Detachment, United Arab Emirates. Preceding her in death were her grandfathers, Johnny Schnell and Jack Terry. Shayna was 19.
