William was the son of William Crawford and Susanna Melvin. He married Joanna Sleeper. They were the parents of 7 children: Mary Jane, George Templeton, Charles Wilson, Laura Ann, Luther, Anna Clara, and Almira E.

Veteran War of 1812 - William enlisted as a Private in United States Army 5th Infantry under Captain Frederick Conkling's command on 1 Mar 1813. He was discharged after serving as a Colonel.
