US Navy Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the United States Navy as Quartermaster Third Class. During the Spanish American War, he was an Apprentice first class on Commodore George Dewey's flagship of the Asiatic Fleet, USS "Olympia," and was present at the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery on January 21, 1903 His citation reads "For heroism while serving on board the USS Leyden at the time of the wreck of that vessel." His Medal of Honor was issued on December 26, 1903.
