Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Graduated from the USMA in 1838. He was serving as Major of the 3rd United States Regular Cavalry when the Civil War started, and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel soon after. For much of the early part of the conflict he served as Mustering and Disbursing Officer in Philadelphia, and as Acting Assistant Provost Marshal General for Western Pennsylvania. During the 1863 Gettysburg Campaign he commanded the forces within Philadelphia before being detailed as an aide and Assistant Inspector General on the Staff of Maj. Gen. Darius Couch, who commanded the Union Militia forces within Pennsylvania. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services in recruiting the armies of the United States". He retired as Lieutenant Colonel in 1864.
