He was later commissioned Colonel and commander of the 99th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war, and particularly for gallantry while in command of the picket line at Deep Bottom, Va."
